Funding

Other Awards

Bridge masters and doctoral fellows are required to apply for funding for their second and subsequent years of graduate studies, through national, international or regional scholarships and/or research operating grants.

The following tables provide an introduction to most of the major scholarships. Because some awards are restricted to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants, there are separate tables for awards available to citizens, and for awards available to all students, including international visa students. It is vital to check eligibility criteria before applying.

Other UBC websites provide more complete and up-to-date information on funding sources:

  • the Faculty of Graduate Studies
    • Graduate Awards website provides information on awards administered by the Faculty
  • the Office of Research Services

It is important to consider ALL awards for which you might be eligible. It might surprise you to know that every year there are awards which go unclaimed because no one has applied.

Scholarship Application Information Sessions

Every September, various departments and the Faculty of Graduate Studies organize scholarship information sessions for graduate students on strategies for writing successful award applications. Students should check with their "home" unit, or the Events section of the Faculty of Graduate Studies website for dates.

UBC Travel Awards

After Bridge Fellows have depleted their Research / Travel Stipend, they are eligible to apply for the Graduate Student Travel Fund.

Awards For International Students Only

UBC International Partial Tuition Scholarships

International students are eligible to receive the UBC International Partial Tuition Scholarship.

  • Students do not need to apply for this award since their Department coordinates this process with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
  • Students should receive an Award Acceptance Letter with a Notice of Fellowship, which needs to be signed and returned to their Department.
  • To meet the conditions of this award, it is not possible for Bridge Fellows who are receiving the International Partial Tuition Scholarship to have their tuition paid out of their stipend.
